What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is considered as the oldest healing science. The meaning of the word in Sanskrit, is “The Science of Life.”

The knowledge of Ayurveda originated in the ancient Vedic culture in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called the “Mother of All Healing". The principles of many of the natural healing systems now familiar in the West have their roots in Ayurveda.

Maintaining Balance & Health

Ayurveda is a holistic science - A science of Life, which places great importance on prevention and maintenance of health through lifestyle, right thinking, diet and the use of herbs.

The practice of the principles of Ayurveda enables one to understand how to create and sustain balance of body, mind and awareness according to one’s own individual make-up or, if in an unhealthy state -  how to make lifestyle choices to bring about and maintain such balance.

Ayurveda doesn't treat symptoms in the way allopathic medicine does, but looks at each and every individual, recognising that we are all unique and thus have unique needs. There is no "one size fits all" - no diet or life choice that is right for everyone. This is a profound and holistic way of seeing each individual in their particular combination of physical, mental and emotional characteristics—which comprises their own constitution. This constitution is determined at conception by a number of factors and remains the same throughout one’s life.

Many factors, both internal and external, can influence the balance in this unique constitution -  like emotional and physical stress, emotional state, diet and food choices, seasons and weather, physical trauma, work and family relationships.

Once these influences are acknowledged, one can feel empowered to reclaim their own health and wellbeing back into their hands and take appropriate actions to sustain the balance of one’s original constitution.

In the words of Dr. Lad: "Balance is the natural order; imbalance is disorder. Health is order; disease is disorder. Within the body there is a constant interaction between order and disorder. When one understands the nature and structure of disorder, one can re-establish order."
